Redleg can cater for all your packing and crating requirements, from museum standard crating to budget soft-pack. The size and design of shipping crates is determined by media, condition, size and number of works. All crates are custom made for the artwork and to suit your needs.

All crates are constructed from timber and ply with insulation and a moisture barrier, case handles, floor runners, painted white and displaying the necessary safety and identification markings.

Your exhibits arrive in perfect condition because Redleg staff take the time to analyse and implement a packing process that assures your items are treated with the utmost of care.

One of the specialist crating requests Redleg has handled was the conversion of crates used to ship exhibits for the Entombed Warriors exhibition from China. The original crates were nailed together and used foam-wrapped battens. Redleg converted the crates to modular format, enabling the crates to be easily dismantled by hand, reducing shock and risk to the exhibits.

Hints for soft-packing

If you are using an art-dedicated carrier like Redleg, seal the entire work in a bubble-wrap or clear plastic envelope (bubbles outside). Clearly label the front and back of the package. If the item is larger than 1200 x 1200 mm, provide lifting points at both ends. The main reason to wrap all your works is to reduce the potential for surface contamination by handling and the elements, between buildings and the truck.

If you are sending paintings by normal transport, wrap the entire painting in a bubble-wrap envelope, sandwich the wrapped painting between two sheets of heavy cardboard or something similar, using styrofoam blocks to hold the sheets apart. Ensure that the blocks cannot slip. Firmly strap, tape or tie the sandwich together. This is called a "sandwich pack".
